RE-DEFINING SEXY

A Traditional African Dance Form

Who Am I ?

I'm not the average girl from your video
I’m not built like a supermodel
I Learned to love myself unconditionally
Because I am a QUEEN..

“Life is full of choices” “Be Free” “Beautiful”
I am "Mayasa” (MAH-yah-sah)  I've danced from the womb of my mother to an integrated structure of my loving grandparents.  An African yet native of Hyattsville, Maryland, I began my journey into the world of Belly dance years ago as a member of the "Original MoorHips" Dance Company, the largest African American troupe in the United States.

A collective effort by the "Original MoorHips Dance Troupe, we meticulously combined our skills, knowledge and resources; organized and cultivated the Bellydancers of Color Association (BOCA) and the Belly dance Conference (BOCA FEST) held annually.

A bellydance instructor at Marcellus Dance Studio, in Forestville Maryland I began to implement an enhanced approach toward this art form; diversified my training privileged to have studied with such instructors as Tarik Sultan, Djenaba Bryant. Sunyatta Amen, Morocco, Somra El Nubia and Nabeela El Shalimar to name a few.

I have traveled throughout the US and Caribbean performing and participating in all aspects of this dance. Ensuring the emphasis is on health and healing the physical, psychological, social, economic, and cultural factors related to this ancient African dance. I was seen on Fox 5 Morning News "Belly dancing for Health" segment with Holly Morrison.  Interviewed by the famous Dr. Ray Hagins from WBLR Radio, Featured in several performance DVD’S including a belly dance instructional DVD (click link to see instructional dvd clip) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mnnBs7h4n6g

I currently study with master instructors and advanced teacher training under the direction of Dunham Technique Master, Djenaba Bryant. I practice Bikram Yoga in Alexandria, Virginia and meditation technique with DC House of Meditation. I am a mother, wife and graduate of the world's largest nutrition school, teaching the future of nutrition and wellness; Institute of Intergrative Nutrition. www.mayasatelfair.com  I'll continue to take master classes specific for instructors and contend I will always be a student because life itself is a learning experience.

Belly dancing expands much further into my community, including “It’s All About Us” an educational mentorship program for all goddess teens. Improving literacy in areas such as reading and finance, and volunteering to keep young people engaged academically in education by reading to children at our local elementary schools. Leading a natural cleaning service for stay at home moms, home schooled children and daycares. (The Nxt Generation) Not forgetting those who are in greater need by preparing food at our local shelter and aiding those who are in crisis.

Behind my pride there lives a me, that knows humility… passion and “femininity". I share a part of me through this dance in Northern Virginia where I currently reside.
